Let’s face it, we all need a little confidence boost in certain situations. Whether it’s going for that job interview or making that all important presentation, a boost in confidence and reducing the nerves is a highly desirable state to achieve. So how could you do it?
Below are 3 simple things that you can do to give you that added boost in your confidence and reduce those idea blocking nerves:
1 – Change your physiology
Your emotions and your posture are intimately linked. Notice the next time you’re feeling down and upset. You will realise that your posture is closed. Your shoulders are dropped and your head will probably be down. By contrast, your posture when you’re feeling happy and in a good state of mind, your posture is open, your shoulders are back and head held up high. Ok, so by knowing that your posture and state of mind is interlinked, you can boost your confidence levels by simply changing your posture. Change your posture to reflect confidence. Stand straight and upright, hold your head up, chest out, shoulders back and notice how quickly you feel more confident.
2 – Change your breathing
When you’re feeling nervous or anxious, your breathing becomes quicker, shallow and you tend to breathe higher up in the chest. By consciously changing your breathing and taking, slower, deeper and diaphragmatic breaths, you can quickly change your state and become calmer and more relaxed.
3 – Run a confident movie in your mind
You tend to get what you focus on. The key with this is to run a mental movie of how you want the interview or presentation or whatever the situation is to go. The key is to run the ‘Ideal outcome’ in your mind. Run it over and over. Repeat it as much as possible and as often as possible. This has the effect of giving your subconscious mind a target. An objective, if you will, to achieve. See yourself behaving in a confident manner and also see yourself answering all questions with ease. This helps you mentally prepare to be your best on the day.
